RE: Tent camping with my golden retriever

Back in the 90's, we tent camped with our 90 lb. Golden. We always went to National Forests so that he could hike with us. He was great fun! And a night, when it got cold, he was great to snuggle up to. He always went where we went. We never left him at the ten alone. Go & have fun! If your Golden is like most Goldens, he/she will love it!

Grand Canyon NP - winter job?

Hi,
Anyone work at Grand Canyon Natl Park during the winter months? I know the South Rim is open year-round, and I was wondering what the weather is like during the winter.
Thank you!

RE: feedback on Yellowstone

Our first paid workamping job was in Yellowstone, and we're from Florida. Yes, Yellowstone is remote, and if you need to be near a city then Yellowstone probably isn't for you. If you want TV, you must bring your own satellite. Last summer we went the entire season without TV. After a few days, we didn't even miss it. If you enjoy wildlife, hiking, beautiful scenery, you just can't beat Yellowstone. We are going back for our third season in April. I've also heard recently that Xanterra is still hiring for the summer. Their webpage is www.yellowstonejobs.com

RE: Big Bend NP??

We visited Big Bend NP in 2002 for about 4 nights. We spent two nights in each of the NPS campgrounds - no hook-ups, but nice big sites. We did a few hikes, but I can't remember the names. We picked up good info in the visitor's center. It's a very pretty place to hike. The roads were fine. We drove our F350 all over the place. As for wildlife - we had javalinas come through the campground each afternoon. We also saw lots of Roadrunners and other birds. Didn't come across any snakes, bears or cats. I think the chances of seeing a bear or cat are pretty slim. We hope to get down that way again in April. Have fun!

RE: Places to eat/drink near Long Key SP & Curry Hammock

When we lived on Grassy Key, we would eat at The Wreck quiet often...great burgers, fish sandwiches, etc. Located next to Dolphin Research Center which is fun to visit.

RE: Best Fla rv resorts

You might want to check out The Great Outdoors Golf & Nature Resort in Titusville. It is located on Florida's Space Coast. Lots of activities, a beautiful resort, and if you're lucky, you might see a launch of the Space Shuttle.

RE: Truck Tent

We have one and used it on our F350 a few times last summer in the Yellowstone area. We loved it, except for one thing...once you get it set up, you really can't move the truck. Which isn't too bad, as long as you want to stay put a few days, but we like to hike and need to get to trail heads. So, we just bought a ground tent to use this summer, and we'll be getting rid of the truck tent.

RE: Southern Fla - Alligator Alley

When we lived in Marathon, we would always take Hwy 41 to visit
family in Naples. It's a good road with great scenery & lots of gators!
I would suggest you fill up your gas tank before getting on 41...not much fuel (if any) available across the Everglades.
Have fun!

RE: Corporate Greed Strikes Seniors Again

FWIW, the Golden Age pass is honored at all campgrounds in Yellowstone, including the 5 managed by Xanterra, except Fishing Bridge RV Park. If you want hook-ups in Yellowstone, you will pay full price.

RE: Medical Insurance

We are fulltimers and also buy our own health insurance. We use Blue Cross/Blue Shield of FL. We are paying much less than $800, but we are a younger too (58 & 43).
Go to their web page, www.bcbsfl.com, click on "get quote," provide the information required, and you will get instant quotes. You will need to provide a zip code. If you use America Homebase mail forwarding in Pensacola, the zip is 32513.
Also, you can do the same thing for BC/BS of Texas at www.bcbstx.com.
The rates are primarily based on your age and zip code, and of course what type policy.
Good luck! I'm always searching around for good health insurance, and we always decide to stick with BCBS of Florida. No one can beat their rates for us. The insurance is good throughout the country.

RE: Ok, all you fashion experts......

I'm no fashion expert, but being from the south, I was raised to never wear white before Easter or after Labor Day. Did I abide by it? You bet! Every good southern lady I knew did.
I always thought this "rule" was more of a southern thing....like sweet tea and grits....

RE: Camping on New Years Eve

One year, when we were living outside Atlanta, we pulled the rig to Myrtle Beach for the week between Christmas & New Year's. We had a site right on the beach & there were no crowds. We stumbled upon a great Italian restaurant that had seatings for their New Year's Eve celebration. We had a great time! Keep in mind, this was several years ago & things may have changed since then.
Whatever you do, be safe & have fun!

RE: winter workamping jobs

Good INFO: and what a nice place to work for the winter. Just a great way to find a place. How do you like the hill country so far? Is the pay good? thanks for all your input!
I would suggest that if you haven't already, be sure to subscribe to Workamper News. Lots of jobs included in each edition. Through Workamper you can also create your resume and email it to those employers who interest you.Workamper News Web Page
Another option that worked for us this year. I looked through my campground directories, found resorts that looked interesting and emailed our resume. We got hired by a resort that wasn't even advertising for help.
Hope this helps. Good luck!

RE: How many regret their decission to FT ???

We began fulltiming in 2000. After about a year of traveling & touring, I decided I needed/wanted a house. We found a nice house in Homosassa, FL. We bought it in April 2001. Around December 2001, I told my husband, "I miss the road!"
So, we put out our resumes, got jobs in Montana for the summer. Closed up the house in March & headed west. Long story short, we ended up selling the house and are back on the road. We have workamped since being back on the road. We enjoy working more than just traveling & touring.
So, that's our experience. Good luck with your decision.
